Message from the CTO

Fail fast

You're writing an application. You're under a deadline. Perhaps you don't test it as well as you should, but certainly as much as you can. You release. Within a few days you get a bug report back -- your application crashes under certain conditions -- and you have no idea where to look. You enter this multi-hour debugging session trying to find out what's going on, and it's all code within code all the way down.

Now, I like debugging, don't get me wrong. But as I've got older, debugging is just a pain in the neck -- despite the advances that have been and that are being made in that space. It's a colossal waste of time.

Introducing the DevExpress eXpress Presentation Framework

Some big news from our Silverlight and WPF teams this week. In a joint effort, that began way back with DXperience v2009 vol 1, our developers have completed a merge that sees our Silverlight and WPF codebases become one ? the eXpress Presentation Framework.

This foundation is great news for developers working with these new platforms. It means that our product teams will be able to deliver you more controls, even more quickly, by utilising a common codebase upon which they will build cross-platform controls.

We¡¯re excited. Are you?

Free CodeRush Licenses at the VS 2010 Launch

Next week, Las Vegas will see a huge gathering of developers descend onto The Strip as Microsoft prepares to launch Visual Studio 2010. In the vastly opulent Bellagio Hotel and Casino, the DevExpress team will join thousands of other developers to support Microsoft as it unleashes a brand new IDE.

With the very latest version of CodeRush Xpress being integrated into this Microsoft release, Mark Miller will be presenting a session on high-speed coding where you can pick up one of 200 free copies of CodeRush just by joining him.

Check out more details on the session in Mehul¡¯s blog and let us know if you¡¯ll be there in the comments below!

Early Previews of Build 50 From the VCL Team

There has been a somewhat overwhelming amount of information flying around about our .NET products, but don¡¯t worry Delphi-lovers, we¡¯ve got news for you too.

Julian took the VCL team for some time out in an effort to prize a few nuggets of news from them. He had a pretty great result too and his latest blog includes some early pointers on what the team are planning for Build 50.

Win Prizes in the DevExpress Easter Egg Contest

Last week DevExpress swept the boards of yet another set of awards. ComponentSource named DevExpress their Number One Publisher, and DXperience was awarded the accolade of their Number One Product. In addition, out of 10,000 products the VCL Subscription also featured in the Top 75 list of products.

As these results are wholly down to our customers, we thought it fitting to share our success with you by offering you the chance to get your hands on more award-winning DevExpress software.

Find out how you could be a DevExpress winner in our Easter Egg Contest and get hunting!

DevExpress Channel: XPO CodeRush Plug-In

DX Squad member, Michael Proctor, was inspired by Oliver Sturm¡¯s plug-in, XPOFieldSync. Michael wanted to build on Oliver¡¯s idea and create a plug-in that would provide a mechanism to specify XPO Simplified Criteria Syntax in a strongly typed manner.

And so XPO_EasyFields was born.

Check out this short screencast from Michael and Mehul and tell us what you think of the plug-in. Will it help you?

DevExpress Technology Helps Fight Stock Exchange Fraud

Market abuse is a consistent threat to the financial markets and technology is becoming a crucial mainstay in the ability to maintain the integrity of the huge bodies of information that are generated.

The Republic of Srpska Securities Commission was tasked with developing a system to cover four main areas of data administration: data entry, data gathering, data surveillance and data analysis. On top of this, their development team had the pressure of responding to European Union Market Abuse Directives.

Extensive integration of the DevExpress UI controls helped them to rapidly develop a large number of applications and implement almost 50% of their main processes into an integrated information system. All of this in just a third of their planned timeframe.

Top 5 Tips from DevExpress Support

Here's this week's top 5 list:

* ExpressQuantumGrid - Handle word wrapping in the CustomDrawCell event
* ExpressScheduler - Delete a custom event and recover an event series
* XtraGrid - Highlight matching text for GridLookUpEdit's filtered records
* XtraGrid - Why multple row selection disables one-click response of in-place CheckEdit?
* ASPxGauge - Why it might not work in medium trust environment
