Message from the CTO

We're developers, right? We are gods in the machine, our world is black and white, binary ones and zeros are our meat and drink. As such, we see through marketing blurb in a trice. Us click on AdSense links or read ads in MSDN Magazine? Never! Ergo, it's not worth spending money on, right?

Actually it is. Any company that wants to grow (by definition, that's all of them) has to spend time, resources, and money on getting the word out to entice new customers to purchase. There's always attrition, so you must find new customers. There's cold calling (yuk) or there's advertising and marketing. The alternative -- sitting back and hoping you get noticed or talked about -- is way riskier.

We, of course, want to bring you (and excite you with) new products and functionality, and to do that we have to get new customers. To do that, we advertise, we purchase AdSense, we go to big events like TechEd and support local user groups when we can, we fiddle with SEO strategies, we produce this newsletter. In short, we try to get our brand noticed.

Marketing, no matter what we may think of it personally, is vital for a company's survival.

More "Sneak Peeks" for DXperience v2009 vol 2

Another couple of weeks has brought us very close to code freeze. Already some features are done and are worthy of sneaking a quick peek to whet your appetites for a much-anticipated release. Julian and Oliver have been tiptoeing through the hive of activity in R&D to get the skinny on what's new and worth revealing:

* Hit-Testing in XtraCharts (WinForms Only)
* Custom Drawing the Axis labels in XtraCharts
* Automatic Date-Time Scales in XtraCharts
* Collection Validation in XAF
* Navigation TreeView in XAF
* ASP.NET Rating Control

If you are an up-to-date active customer on the release date, you'll get these new features in v2009.2 as part of your subscription. If not, what are you waiting for?

DevExpress Developer Showcase

Julian gave us some food for thought in his message for this newsletter by saying ¡®Marketing ¡¦ is vital¡¯. Events like TechEd, PDC, and DevConnections are not just an marketing ploy for us to get DevExpress in front of new customers, but, even more, a fantastic opportunity for us to catch up with current customers and see what they are working on and how the DevExpress controls are helping them move forward with their projects.

Talking to smart, motivated and eager users is a great way for us to gather feedback on what we are doing right and what we are doing wrong. Check out the guys in our TechEd Developer Showcase and see why they chose DevExpress. If you want to get your project some air time, get in touch with us on feedback@devexpress.com.

Announcing Updates for VCL Controls

The upcoming update to our VCL product line will include numerous fixes and new feature implementations. The highlight of this release will be a new version of the ExpressQuantumTreeList Suite which introduces various new features such as nested bands, group summaries, built-in context menus and more.

The ExpressLayout Control has also been overhauled and will be included in the upcoming release as version 2 beta. Some of its features include tabbed groups, support for the DevExpress look & feel technology, drag and drop of items between layout controls and more.

From the DevExpress Labs

Although high-quality user interface controls and frameworks can be thought of as our bread-and-butter, we are constantly experimenting in the labs to identify new opportunities we can profitably leverage. Some of these experiments are thrown away before reaching the light of day, and some are released publicly in one form or another. Recently you've seen things like our new Search engine for our website and public discussion threads for support issues, both of which came from our internal teams.

One item that's getting close to fruition is new for us: training courseware. For the initial trial, Oliver has been writing a complete course on writing web forms applications with our ASP.NET controls, and it's almost ready for proofing, jazzing up with courseware-specific icons, images, and typography, and wrapping up into something we can offer to our customers. Although it's likely to be a good couple of months away from a formal announcement, it's looking very good. Stay tuned!

Thinking Outside DXperience

Gary has tackled Google Wave and is now checking out another one of the latest and greatest trends to hit the online world. Unless you¡¯ve been hiding somewhere not even the search engines can find you, you couldn¡¯t help but notice that there¡¯s a new kid on the block; that new kid comes in the shape of Bing, Microsoft¡¯s new search engine. With all this hype we are anticipating big things, but first we need to know the basics: what exactly is a ¡°decision engine¡±? It all sounds suspiciously like Autonomy Software¡¯s IDOL Server to us.

What do you think, will ¡°I¡¯ll Google it¡± give way to ¡°I¡¯ll Bing it¡±? Check out Gary¡¯s blog and tell us what you think.

* It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't got that Bing!
