Success Note

¡°Quercus seems to be around 5 times faster than standard PHP. Resin caching has also made a significant improvement to performance, since we can add application-level caching in a more fine-tuned manner. Quercus also allows us to use JDBC datasources, and DB pooling, which adds efficiency to the data layer. We've also been able to easily utilize Java libraries and existing code right from PHP, which has both development and performance implications (both positive).¡±

March Updates

Web Applications in a Cloud Environment using Resin 4.0

How would you like to update one server and have that unit automatically replicate all the other servers in your cluster? Would it be beneficial to you if you can add or remove servers on demand without impacting your production environment? Resin 4.0¡¯s architectural design offers a unique cluster configuration to address these questions faced by administrator and developers. Conserve hardware and software cost with a virtual environment that¡¯s designed for scalability and reliability. See all the benefits of the new Resin 4.0 cloud support along with the technical underpinnings that make it possible. Read Resin 4.0 White Paper.

Quercus Continues to Gain Momentum as a Performance Enhancing PHP-Java Integrator

Quercus is a fast, open source, 100% Java implementation of PHP. With PHP as a well established and popular front end language for most web applications, it only makes sense to bridge it with an equally powerful and popular Java based business logic backend. For enterprises that are currently using Quercus, get ready for a marked improvement in performance of up to 20% faster than before. For the personal user, Quercus Personal is rapidly gaining momentum now that the PHP community knows how easy and cost effective it is to set up and run PHP applications. Quercus Personal is a great entry point for hobbyists and personal users to experience high performance with a minimal budget. More about Quercus Personal.

New Features

Lightweight Serializing Messaging API for SaaS, Online Gaming and Mobile Devices

Brokered Actor Messaging (BAM) classes in Resin 4.0 are designed for small, bidirectional, interactive messages in clustering protocols, distributed caching, JMS, and distributed deployment. HMTP and XMPP, among many other wireless protocols, work directly with BAM. The direct and clean API and protocol design is composed of the ActorStream (aka the hub) which acts as the central interface and the SimpleActor (aka the spoke) which acts as the extension to applications to receive messages. If small and lightweight footprint are important requirements for your project, check out how BAM can help. More about BAM.

Quercus is now compatible with WordPress 2.7.1 and Drupal 6.10

Less than one month since the release of these two versions, Caucho is pleased to announce that WordPress 2.7.1 and Drupal 6.10 are certified to run on Quercus. Caucho is committed to keeping Quercus as compatible as possible with existing and custom PHP applications. As part of that commitment, Caucho regularly tests and certifies popular open source PHP applications such as WordPress, Drupal, and MediaWiki. More about Quercus.

Upcoming Events

Caucho at the TheServerSide Java Symposium in Less Than One Week

Held in Las Vegas from March 18-20, Caucho will present a Resin 4.0 technology preview that includes:

  • New features and performance improvements to Quercus
  • Java Contexts and Dependency Injection
  • Architecture design for cloud computing
  • New and improved administration and management tools

If you are not attending TSS but will be in or near the vicinity of Las Vegas, we welcome you to contact us at sales@caucho.com to arrange for a meeting.

JavaOne Conference

Held in San Francisco from June 2-5, Caucho will have a booth at JavaOne for the fourth year in a row and we look forward to meeting you during the conference. Most of our staff will be in attendance including Chief Architect Scott Ferguson. Feel free to email us to set up a meeting with our developers or sales team during JavaOne to discuss your deployment. More about JavaOne.

Resin Administration Training

Held in San Francisco from May 6-8, this location is perfect for companies located near the West Coast and is easily accessible to companies outside of the area. For our East Coast customers, we are offering a class in New York later this year. Our London class will be held in October 7-9. If you are unable to attend any of these courses, please see our listing of other 2009 training dates or contact us for more information about onsite training. Register.

Tip of the Month

Load Balance Data Connection Pools

You might have used Resin¡¯s built-in database connection pooling, but did you know that Resin can also transparently load balance across multiple database servers in the backend? It¡¯s as simple as adding more database drivers to your database pool. What¡¯s more, Resin supports database server failover and even failover pools! More about load balance data connection pools.
