E-Notebook 11.5: Now with e-signatures and more

Read E-Notebook article

CambridgeSoft announces that our E-Notebook Workgroup product now includes e-signatures. Electronic signatures allow a fully "paperless laboratory," replacing "wet signatures" and obviating the need for printing out lab notebooks at all. Our Enterprise E-Notebook customers have already been using e-signatures — we now make this feature available for Workgroup customers.

E-Notebook provides a smooth, well-organized interface designed to replace paper laboratory notebooks. With E-notebook, users can easily insert content from Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Acrobat PDF, ChemDraw and structured data in lists and tables.

This article describes the new features in E-Notebook Workgroup 11.5...

  • E-signatures; witnessing & storage
  • Work offline & sync up later
  • Batch Explorer / Synthesis Path
  • Full text searching within MS-Office documents
  • MS-Office 2007 interface

The webinar demonstrates those new features and further discusses...

  • E-Notebook basics
  • Reaction Page & Stoichiometry
  • AutoText and lab protocol templates
  • Search by text and/or by substructure
  • Security & Management

ChemDraw & ChemFinder: Standards at Philips Research

Read ChemFinder article

Dr. Johan Lub is a principal scientist at Philips Research Laboratories in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. He obtained his Ph.D. in 1985 from The University of Amsterdam and is currently working on materials that are designed and synthesized for the electronic industry, such as liquid crystal based optical components or components for batteries.

Most researchers at Philips Research who work with organics use ChemOffice as their standard drawing tool, and in several cases, database tool. The software package was introduced into the company about five years ago mainly because of an urgent need to create databases with not only molecules synthesized at Philips, but also those obtained from others or synthesized outside Philips by companies performing custom synthesis.

The structures generated by ChemDraw can also be read by other programs that are of interest to organic chemists. For example, SciFinder, a desktop program that makes it possible to search the chemical abstracts database of the American Chemical Society, contains a structure drawing program that accepts chemical structures drawn by ChemDraw. At Philips, we also use ChemDraw frequently for adding and editing structures within ChemFinder.

Keeping track of the wide array of information including molecular properties and synthesis data is a crucial job. In order to handle this task, Philips created a variety of databases containing molecules synthesized in house, molecules obtained by custom synthesis, and those obtained commercially.

ChemFinder for Office can be regarded as an extension of the search function present under the start button of Windows. The search function of Windows allows you to search for alphanumeric strings in Word documents and PowerPoint presentations. ChemFinder for Office performs this same type of search, but uses graphical information namely structures or substructures. Over the past several years, a huge amount of documents containing chemical information has been generated at Philips. In several cases, ChemFinder for Office has shown to be an extremely useful tool for recovering documents.

CambridgeSoft and StatSoft Execute Collaboration Agreement

CambridgeSoft and StatSoft, a leading supplier of desktop and enterprise STATISTICA data analysis and data mining software solutions, this month announce the execution of a collaboration agreement. The agreement is the start of formal collaborations between the two companies, complementing CambridgeSoft¡¯s Chem & Bio Office suite with integrated graphical and numerical data analysis capabilities of the STATISTICA software.

Statistica includes not only general-purpose statistical and graphics procedures, but also comprehensive implementations of specialized modules (e.g., for social scientists, biomedical researchers, or engineers). All modules are available to the user as part of an integrated package that can be controlled with a selection of alternative user-interfaces, including comprehensive, Wizard-aided programming languages that can be used to build custom extensions or to integrate STATISTICA with other applications or computing environments.

One can hardly imagine a user who would need all statistical and graphics procedures offered in STATISTICA, however, the experience of many satisfied users of the package indicates that accessibility of analytic and graphics techniques from outside one¡¯s traditional area (offered by the exceptional comprehensiveness of STATISTICA) encourages new, creative ways in which one can verify hypotheses and explore data.

Instructions:

The following nine elements appear nine times each in the grid above:

Am  C  Dy  Er  I  Mo  N  S  Th

Each element appears once in each of the nine rows, once in each of the nine columns, and once in each of the 3x3 boxes outlined with a heavy border.

HINT: The center column spells out the discipline in physical chemistry that is concerned with the ChemDraw equations shown below.

(Those formulas were all drawn in ChemDraw! To download a ChemDraw file with the equations to see how they're made, click here or view our ChemBioClip on special character drawing).

You cannot solve this puzzle unambiguously without figuring out that word!

First to send correct answer to Jesse Gordon: editor@chemoku.com (please use subject line ¡°Chemoku #35 Answer¡±) earns a CambridgeSoft T-shirt!

The answer will appear online at www.ChemStore.com/sudoku along with hints about solving techniques. You can find downloadable fill-in-the-blank versions there now.
