In This Month's Issue:
Altova Announces UModel¢ç 2007
Altova is happy to announce the latest release of our full-featured and very cost
effective UML 2 software modeling and code engineering tool: UModel 2007. UModel
is the starting point for successful software development. You can use it to visually
design application models and generate Java or C# code, or reverse engineer
existing programs into UML 2.1 diagrams, then fine tune your designs and complete
the round trip by regenerating code. UModel takes the mystery out of UML, making
visual software design practical for programmers and project managers everywhere.
It is the simple, cost-effective way to draw on UML.
New features in UModel 2007 include:
1. Support for all 13 UML 2.1 diagram types
¡¤ New interaction overview diagram
¡¤ New timing diagram
¡¤ New communication diagram
¡¤ New package diagram
2. Modeling of XML Schema in UML with code engineering support
¡¤ Interoperability with XMLSpy 2007, which can save XML Schemas as UModel
projects
¡¤ Reverse engineering of XSD files into UML-style diagrams based on class diagrams
¡¤ Graphical editing of XML Schema design models
¡¤ XSD code generation from XML Schema models
¡¤ Round-trip engineering of XML Schema projects
3. Reverse engineering of C# and Java binary files
¡¤ Automatic rendering of UML models from compiled code
¡¤ Round tripping from binary files to source code
4. Hyperlinking of model elements to other diagrams, documents, or Web pages
5. Automatic generation of sequence diagrams from communication diagrams (and
vice versa)
6. XMI import/export enhancements for improved interchange with other UML tools
7.. Much more

Tips and Tricks: Representing XML Schemas as UML Models
XMLSpy 2007 Service Pack 2 (SP2) includes a new option for converting your XML
Schemas to UML models, which can be viewed and edited in Altova UModel 2007,
our powerful, cost-effective UML 2 software design tool. To convert an XML Schema
to UML, follow these easy steps:
1. Make sure you have downloaded and installed XMLSpy 2007 SP2 and UModel 2007
from the Altova download page: http://www.altova.com/download.html. If you're not already
an XMLSpy or UModel customer, you may request a free, 30-day trial key code from
within the application(s).
2. Open the XML Schema you wish to convert in XMLSpy and select 'Convert to
UML' from the DTD/Schema menu.
3. Select the desired options for generating UML diagrams from the 'Convert to UML'
dialog. Be sure to select 'Open generated project in UModel' to launch UModel and
view the resulting UML representation; then click 'OK.'
4. XMLSpy will prompt you to save the new UModel project file. Once you enter a
file name and click 'OK' to save it, UModel will open automatically, allowing you to
view the UML representation of your XML Schema.
From here you can expand the model with additional UML constructs such as use
case diagrams, activity diagrams, or composite structure diagrams that might
describe requirements behind the design and illustrate how application logic interacts
with the schema. You can even make changes to the schema in UModel and synch
them back to the original XML Schema file.
