Welcome to the premiere
edition of SolarInk
— our monthly newsletter dedicated to keeping you informed about
the latest developments at SolarWinds. Over the past 12 months we have
experienced significant growth. With the introduction of our
configuration management solution – Cirrus, we¡¯ve seen downloads jump to more than 20,000
per month, User Forum participation grow to
more than 7,500 members and development efforts expand to work on product
enhancements. (Hint: look for some exciting new releases this year.)
With all of this
growth, we¡¯ve also seen a spike in the volume of requests for
additional information. In order to enhance (and streamline) our
communications with you, we¡¯ve created SolarInk. From product
updates to deployment tips to general company news, I hope you find the
content useful. We will continue to evolve the newsletter based on
requests from you. Please send us your feedback, so we can provide you
with the information you want and need.
Sincerely,
Don Yonce,
Founder/Chief Architect

Working
directly with the Orion database can offer big advantages¡¦
|
The Orion database is a
standard, open SQL Server database and can be modified directly when bulk
changes are needed. You can modify the database using the SolarWinds
Database Manager or the SQL Enterprise Manager. However, before modifying
the database directly you should keep these things in mind:
- Always create a backup of the database first.
- Be sure to stop the Orion Network Performance Monitor
polling service before making any changes directly to the database.
You can restart the service once your changes are in
place.
- Pay special attention to the fields that you¡¯re
changing. Remember, there is not an ¡°undo¡± feature in
SQL.
If you aren¡¯t familiar
with making changes in SQL tables, here are a couple of sample queries to
get you going:
Let¡¯s assume that your
current community string is ¡°public¡± and you¡¯ve just
updated all of your nodes so that the new string is
¡°s3cur1ty¡±. Here is a query that you could use to update the
database:
Update Nodes
Set community = ¡®s3cur1ty¡¯
Where community = ¡®public¡¯
Also, the
SolarWinds user forums are a
great resource for getting more information about advanced features such
as this.
